Topic: Summer Fun! The Importance of Parental Interaction for Your Child's Development
Summer is around the corner! Are you starting to plan fun summer activities for your children? And by fun, do you mean summer programs designed to help your children prepare for the new school year—or actual time to play?
According to recent research from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, 77% of the adults surveyed acknowledged that children do not have enough time to play. One in three of the same respondents believed that their children needed to “win at the starting line,” even though nearly all of them also thought that children experienced high levels of stress over studying. Does play really ensure children will get a head start in life? How can parents best play with their child?
Decades of research have demonstrated play is vital for both children and the parents who play with them. In this talk, Dr. Eva Chen will share tips on how parents can best play with their children to ensure a crucial foundation for children's learning and development are formed, as well as to demonstrate how child-led play can lead to success and creative parents.
Dr. Eva Chen is an Assistant Professor at the Division of Social Science at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. She is interested in how children learn, and how their social backgrounds can impact their learning preferences. Eva was born in the U.S. and grew up in Taiwan, before moving back to America to pursue her undergraduate degree at Stanford University and her graduate studies at Harvard University.
