Safety Guidelines:

- Avoid direct eye exposure to the light source

- Do sunburn protection before you play under the sun.

Steps:

1. Try this activity during the day. Find a place with sunlight at home or at an outdoor space!
If there is no sunlight at home, try other light sources, such as a torch.

2. Place different objects under the light source and observe the formed shadows.

3. Put the drawing paper on the shadow and draw the outline of the shadow.

Different Ways to Play!

Try the different methods based on children's abilities and preferences.

1. Place the objects one by one under the sun and on the drawing paper, draw their outlines. If desired, fill them with color.

2. Combine different objects to create group shadows.

3. Invite children to use their body to create different movements. Trace your child's shadow onto the paper. Adults and children can exchange positions.

What Children are Learning:

(1) Understand everyday phenomena

During the activity, children can experience different everyday phenomena, such as: noticing the intensity of the sun, the direction of sunlight and its variability, the formation and characteristics of shadows, etc.

(2) Cultivate creativity and aesthetic

In addition to using hand-eye coordination and body awareness, this activity also fosters creativity and aesthetics. Creativity helps improve children's problem-solving skills. When creating and outlining different shadows, children will have a more in-depth observation of daily life objects and learn to appreciate things from different perspectives.
