Discovery Team Staff

REPORTS TO: “Discovery Director” and “Director of Education”

TYPE OF POSITION: Part­ time and full-time available. HKCDM is looking for 12­-15 Discovery Staff

LOCATION: North Point. Shifts will be staggered to cover all of the museum’s opening hours and events.

POSITION TO BE FILLED BY: Job to start beginning September 2018. 

JOB DESCRIPTION: Discovery Staff are the front­line “face” of the museum, who will engage with HKCDM’s visitors on the museum floor in exhibits and educational programs. Museum visitors will include families with children and school groups. Discovery Staff will be dedicated to one area of the museum (e.g. Reception, Toddlers, Tinkering Lab, etc.) based on the candidates’ background and interests. Candidates with the right experience may be hired in a managerial capacity.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Provide guest services which may include ticketing, answering questions, leading welcome greetings and closing goodbyes

  2. Facilitate educational programs and drop­in workshops, as well as to run events such as birthday parties, outreach, etc.

  3. Act as content “experts”, representing museum educational content (science, arts, storytelling, etc.) in an accurate and fun manner

  4. Oversee volunteers, including training them in daily activities and modeling behavior

  5. Conduct exhibit and program evaluations with museum visitors

  6. Reset and tidy exhibits between use and assist in cleaning between sessions

  7. Assist in creating educational programs and in exhibit prototyping

REQUIREMENTS: ­

  • Experience working with children and families. Teaching qualification is a plus ­

  • Associate degree or University degree, preference in related discipline such as child development, education, theatre, arts, science ­

  • Existing expertise in content (science, arts, storytelling, etc.) is not necessary but ideal candidates will be curious and willing to learn. Candidates are encouraged to share their own skills and backgrounds to help shape museum programs ­

  • Embraces unstructured play and has a passion for lifelong learning ­

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills (Biliterate in Chinese and English. Bilingual in Cantonese and English. Mandarin is a plus) ­

  • Ability to represent HKCDM in a friendly and welcoming manner. Can react quickly, calmly, and professionally in handling situations that arise ­

  • Positive attitude and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team ­

  • Flexible schedule, which will include some nights and weekends ­

  • Interest and willingness to work in a startup environment
